Render Everything Everywhere

The 3D Commerce Working Group brings together industry-leading e-commerce companies and Khronos deep 3D graphics expertise to remove the barriers to deploying 3D in e-commerce at industrial scale. By extending Khronos' glTF 3D standard asset format, creating 3D authoring guidelines and tools, and certifying 3D Commerce viewers, the group is working to enable the seamless design, manufacture, and presentation of countless 3D products across diverse consumer platforms to reach millions of end-users

3D content is poised to become pervasive in retail. Virtual representations of products will be everywhere, including in ads, search results and the web using mobile, the Web, and Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) devices. Although 3D promises to be a powerful merchandising tool, the challenge today is that not all 3D content can be experienced consistently across platforms and devices, making both the production and consumption of 3D virtual products siloed, expensive and, ultimately, tough to scale.

Launched as a Khronos Exploratory Group in April 2019, 3D Commerce is now a Working Group under Khronos governance, created to align the industry for streamlined 3D content creation, management and display in online retail. The Exploratory Group brings together more than 70 industry leading companies—including retailers, technology vendors and manufacturers—working together to build industry consensus on what standardization activities are most urgently required for ubiquitous 3D Commerce.

3D Commerce - Render Everything Everywhere

“Building visualization techniques driven by 3D is increasingly a vital element of creating the best possible experience for shoppers, as it provides an invaluable way to explore beautiful imagery with context and authenticity. As we continue to transform the way people shop for their homes, we believe that 3D will be ubiquitous in the coming years and that it is imperative to standardize 3D content so it can be exchanged effectively and experienced consistently.”

3D Commerce Working Group Deliverables

The 3D Commerce Working Group is creating specifications and guidelines to align the 3D asset workflow for online retail from product design and manufacturing, through each stage of retail to end-user delivery, so that 3D representations of products can be experienced realistically and consistently across all devices.

glTF is the JPEG of 3DEnabling the use of 3D in retail to scale-up to industrial levels will create significant commercial opportunities for all companies involved in the creation, distribution, and display of virtual product representations

3D Commerce Synergy with other Khronos Standards

The 3D Commerce Working Group will also leverage and help guide the evolution of other Khronos open standards, including:

  • glTF for transmission of photorealistic 3D assets
  • WebGL for interactive 3D applications on the Web
  • Vulkan for high-performance, interactive 3D graphics for applications such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)
  • OpenXR for enabling AR and VR applications that are portable across multiple vendor platforms
  • OpenVX for portable, power-efficient vision processing and inferencing used in AR and scanning applications
